Chorizo Seasoning And Its Ingredients

The word chorizo is familiar to us since chorizo sausage is a favorite among all sausage lovers. Chorizo seasoning, also known as chorizo powder, has been specifically used to season the meat used to make this sausage. And it is basically a blend of various robust ground spices and herbs.

Chorizo Seasoning And Its Ingredients - SpiceRally

Chorizo seasoning can be easily bought from the store. But many prefer making their own blend at home without any artificial additives or preservatives. Most recipes contain salt along with the key ingredients. It has a well-rounded, fragrant flavor profile with a kick of heat and smoky, savory undertones.

The best thing about this blend is its versatility to flavor other dishes apart from sausages. Its combination of Mexican and Spanish ingredients adds a depth of flavor to create incredibly delicious meals, which include vegetable and meat dishes, gumbo, hearty chilis, soups, or you can even spice up your scrambled eggs!

Spices And Herbs In Chorizo Seasoning

  • Ancho Chili Powder– This is the base of this seasoning blend which gives its distinctive earthiness, heat, and beautiful color. Ancho chili powder is ground, dried ancho chilies with mild hotness scoring 1000-1500 SHU on the heat scale. This spice brings out the Spanish-Mexican accent of this seasoning blend, pairing well with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Paprika– This spice is the next important element that makes chorizo seasoning unique in its flavor.  Smoked paprika and regular paprika are often used in this blend to combine with the chili powder. Paprika also enhances the hue of this mixture so that it’ll complement the rich dishes.
  • Garlic Powder- Pungent and aromatic garlic powder is another non-negotiable in the blend since it is responsible for the strong garlicky note of this seasoning blend. This spice teams up with most other ingredients used.
  • Onion Powder– Robust onion powder provides a sharp and rich umami flavor to chorizo seasoning, pairing particularly well with garlic powder, dried oregano, chili powder, ground cumin, coriander, etc.
  • Ground Cumin– This spice offers a distinctive nutty, warm, earthy, and slightly bitter-sweet undertone to this seasoning blend. Ground cumin pairs well with most other elements to complement decadent recipes that call for chorizo seasoning.

  • Ground Coriander- Gentle, earthy, and citrusy ground coriander is the perfect flavor stabilizer for this blend. It impressively balances out the piquant flavors of other powerful ingredients to make this seasoning favorable for any meat or vegetable dish.
  • Black Pepper– Ground black pepper adds a unique peppery hint to chorizo seasoning, teaming up with chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder, collectively making the universal seasoning with salt.
  • Dried Oregano- Most often, Mexican oregano is used in this mixture since it has more citrusy, earthy, and licorice hints to provide a contrasting flavor to the blend. This herb pairs with all the other ingredients used to boost the taste of any dish, calling for chorizo seasoning.

Other Ingredients

Apart from the key ingredients mentioned previously, most chorizo seasoning options contain salt as an essential ingredient. And in addition to that, the following elements can be featured in different recipes depending on the maker or the merchant:

  • Ground cinnamon
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Chili powder
  • Ground allspice
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Ground cloves
  • Dried thyme

TASTY NOTES BY SpiceRally

  • Although we have included salt in our chorizo powder recipe, you can skip this ingredient if that’s what you prefer.
  • We recommend using Ancho chili powder, but if you can’t find it around, go ahead and substitute it with regular chili powder.
  • We have used cayenne pepper to enhance the spiciness and give a bit of an extra kick of heat to our recipe. But you can skip cayenne pepper and replace it with another teaspoon of smoked paprika if desired.
  • Store this chorizo seasoning in a cool, dark, dry place in a well-fitting spice jar, and it will stay flavorful for more than 4 months.
