Ingredients

  • Spices
  • 1 tbsp 1 Regular paprika

  • 1 tbsp 1 Smoked paprika

  • 1 tbsp 1 Granulated garlic

  • 1 tbsp 1 Granulated onion

  • 1 tbsp 1 Red chili flakes

  • 1 tbsp 1 Dill seeds

  • 1 tbap 1 Black peppercorns

  • 1 tbsp 1 Coriander seeds

  • 1 tsp 1 Mustard powder (optional)

  • Other ingredients
  • 1- 1 1/2 tsp 1- 1 1/2 Salt

  • Equipment
  • 1 1 Mixing bowl

  • 1 1 Whisk

  • 1 1 Small saucepan

  • 1 1 Mortar and pestle/ spice grinder

  • 1 1 Well-fitting jar to store

Directions

  • In the mixing bowl, combine together paprika, mustard powder, red chili flakes, granulated garlic, and onion. Mix and keep aside.
  • Keep the saucepan on low heat and add the black peppercorns, coriander seeds, and dill seeds into it. Dry-roast these spices for about two minutes or until fragrant. Do not over-roast them.
  • Remove the spices from the saucepan and transfer them to your mortar and pestle. Grind them coarsely until the flavor of the spices is released. Then, add the pre-combined spice mix into the peppercorn, coriander, and dill seed mixture and grind until the flavors of all the spices are well incorporated with each other.
  • You should get a coarsely ground spice mixture by now. Remove the spices from the mortar and pestle and put them back into the mixing bowl. Add salt and whisk until well combined.
  • Now you can use your homemade Montreal steak seasoning immediately or store it in a tightly sealed spice jar/container until you need it again.

Tasty Notes By SpiceRally

  • This seasoning blend is a coarse mixture. But if you need it to be nicely ground, you can use the spice grinder instead of the mortar and pestle to turn it into a fine powder.
  • Our version of Montreal steak seasoning is a recipe with a bit of a flavor twist. We have made the changes by using less salt and two varieties of paprika. Therefore, please note that you can adjust the amount of salt that goes in, and it is completely fine to use only one type of paprika, depending on what you have in your pantry.
  • Using mustard powder is not a must. You can skip it if you want.
  • If you wish to make your recipe hotter, you can use about half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper for extra punch.
  • You can also use dried dill weed instead of dill seeds. But then, you don’t have to dry roast it with black peppercorns and coriander seeds necessarily.
  • This blend is highly versatile- go ahead and use this with chili, fries, and roasted potatoes, toss it with popcorn or rub it on shrimp, salmon, etc.
  • This will stay fresh in an air-tight glass container for up to six months. Make sure to use a dry spoon to scoop out the content every time you use it, or simply use a glass spice shaker to store it.
